Red Hat Makes Supported OpenStack Release: Open Source Posted by: comforteagle
From the IaaS dept.:
Red Hat has produced a fully-supported OpenStack distribution so customers can deliver open-source infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) clouds, at its Red Hat Summit in Boston this week.
The open source firm has been a member and supporter of OpenStack for some time, but with this announcement, its OpenStack distribution graduates from a “community release” similar to its Fedora Linux distribution, to a fully supported offering, comparable to its Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) OS. The company wants to position OpenStack as a future cloud platform analogous to Linux, and is building it into a whole set of announcements and programmes.

German Parliament Tells Government To Strictly Limit Patents On Software: Legal Posted by: comforteagle
From the Line in Sand dept.:
On Friday the 7th of June the German Parliament decided upon a joint motion to limit software patents. The Parliament urges the German Government to take steps to limit the granting of patents on computer programs. Software should exclusively be covered by copyright, and the rights of the copyright holders should not be devalued by third parties' software patents. The only exception where patents should be allowed are computer programs which replace a mechanical or electromagnetic component. In addition the Parliament made clear that governmental actions related to patents must never interfere with the legality of distributing Free Software.

Major Design Overhaul for Firefox: Mozilla Posted by: comforteagle
From the High Concept dept.:
The biggest change comes down to the new look for tabs or the complete revamp of the main Firefox menu. Actually, we’d probably side with the latter since the menu is being moved from the left to the right, and it will be apparently accessed via a button that looks nearly identical to Google Chrome’s hot dog icon.
There’s more; here are the major changes that are slated for this release:
Curved tabs.
Remove tab affordance from background tabs.
Separate Bookmark Star from locationBar and merge with Bookmarks Menu item.
Updated Panel Based Application Menu and Customization Mode.
Windows (All): Draw entire window frame including Caption Buttons.
Windows XP: Custom window frame style for all default themes.

Aussie Government Proposes OpenDocument As the Standard Format: Standards Posted by: comforteagle
From the Interop dept.:
The Australian government chief technical officer wants some views on proposals for the official standard operating environment, which features OpenDocument as the proposed document format. Otherwise, the Aussie government is pretty much a Microsoft shop, with Windows 7 x64 and IE10 as the standard platform. 'Interoperability and support for several versions of Microsoft Office is cited by the AGCTO as reasons to go with ODF, along with flexibility and the fact that the format is continously updated and developed. Spreadsheet formulae are now included in the ODF 1.2 specification as well and the AGTO believes that this, along with Microsoft Office 2013 supporting the format, will help to reliably transfer formulae between applications.'
